All funds raised during my ride across Australia went to either the Australian or New Zealand Heart Foundation depending on the donor’s wish.
It was a thrill to be named Best Individual Fund-raiser for 2011 by the Queensland Branch of the Australian Heart Foundation.
Special thanks to EVERYONE who supported my ride.

REST DAY
Day 5 - 4th April 2011
Kalgoorlie - Western Australia
Day 5 - 4th April 2011
Kalgoorlie - Western Australia
My first rest day - Kalgoorlie - Western Australia.
Of course, mining is what this area is known for and from which it gains its great wealth.
Visiting the "superpit" was amazing - so huge, so vast!! Tours are available to go down into mines, but I was happy enough viewing from above. I hadn't realised how this was one of Alan Bond's major undertakings!
The towns of Kalgoorlie and Boulder which were once quite separate, are joined together nowadays - really just like two suburbs.
While I rested my legs, and my backside enjoyed a day off the bike seat, Pat had quite a "sporty" day.
I had read about - "the longest golf course in the world" - the Nullabor Golf Course, and if you are travelling from west to east - Kalgoorlie is where it starts!! You buy your "card" at the Visitor Information Centre and then play the first 2 holes at the Kalgoorlie Golf Club - playing your way across the Nullabor with the final 2 holes at Ceduna. I had only brought 4 clubs on the trip - 5 wood, 5 and 9 irons and a putter! Pat was swinging a golf club (my old clubs at that) for the first time in 25 years - so we were to expect the unexpected!! Kalgoorlie Golf Course was very nice - considering the lack of water in this area it had pretty good fairways and what we call greens - grass ones!!
Pat was also itching to try out her new Drakes Pride International bowls having not had a chance since playing with them at Scarborough in Perth with the lovely ladies from that Club. The main Club in Kalgoorlie was having its greens sprayed for weeds - but she got to "roll up" at "Kalgoorlie Railway Ladies Bowling Club" - a separate club in its own right.
We had an interesting drive and wander around Kalgoorlie and Boulder townships, had a relaxed picnic lunch in a beautiful park where there was plenty of Australian bird and animal life, visited a museum to learn more about the history of the mining in this area and generally got a good feel for the place.
All in all, a lovely day, so I was pleased that we changed schedule to take a day off here!!
